Artist Statement

My art tells my story.  I create work that has a dynamic, inherent energy.  I want to encourage a narrative interaction between my piece and the viewer.

I express myself through photography, printmaking ceramics, and drawing.  It was my mom who first introduced me to photography.  My photos document my adventures and explorations into the environment that surrounds me.  Printmaking and drawing have become interconnected throughout my work.   Many of my drawings later become lithographs or intaglio prints.  I am attracted to the sheer physicality of the printmaking process and the unique problem solving challenges it presents.   Ceramics has become a sculptural medium for my drawings and ideas.  I am able to create more whimsical pieces.  Like printmaking, ceramics has a certain unpredictable quality that I enjoy.

Much of my recent work has been inspired by my Undergraduate Research studies abroad in Italy.  After participating in a drawing workshop in Florence and studying the work of Renaissance artists, the human figure has taken a more central role in my work.  I continue to draw large-scale charcoal portraits to better understand the intricacies of the human figure.
